This AA comes from the the Gichathaini Station of the Gikanda Farmers Co-Operative in Nyeri, Kenya. We contracted this coffee during our visit in March and are pumped the coffee has finally arrived. The quality of the coffee speaks for itself… but it is reflective of the values and commitment to excellence amongst the farmers of the Gikanda Co-op.
The co-operative encourages producers to only plant SL34/SL28; these are Kenyan varieties that are regarded to produce a higher quality cup than newer lab grown alternatives. These varieties planted in the rich volcanic soil created by Mount Kenya and proper farming practices (fertilizing properly and harvesting properly ripe cherries), along with the careful processing of the coffee after harvest also greatly contributes to the quality of this coffee.
Gikanda Coop is fairtrade/organic certified… but most importantly they are committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility above and beyond what these certifications require. In their own words, “We are committed to sustainable farming practices that not only enhance our coffee but also protect our environment. We're not just coffee growers; we're guardians of tradition and stewards of the environment, ensuring each cup of Gikanda Coffee represents a sustainable legacy.”
