We’ve been purchasing coffee from Hacienda La Minita for 10 years. We’ve purchased dozens of microlots separated by process, variety, estate, and elevation. When Jim let us know he brought SL28 seeds from Kenya to the farm 5 years ago, we asked if we could “reserve” the first harvest. Last year we were able to taste the SL28 grown on the farm for the first time but there wasn’t enough for export.
This year, we received the entire harvest, only 40kgs, in vacuum sealed bags ready for us to roast. La Minita processed the coffee in the same way SL28 is traditionally processed in Kenya - sometimes called the “triple washed process” or Kenya Washed… this process introduces an additional stage when the coffee is cold fermented in water after being depulped prior to being dried on raised beds. The result is a lovely SL28 representing the best of Costa Rican terroir and a Kenya profile of ripe purple fruits and berries.
